Commercial carpet tiles are the default flooring choice for high-traffic environments such as offices, hotels, and retail malls. Compared with broadloom, they ship more efficiently, install faster, and allow localized replacement — but only if you specify the right parameters. This guide walks through the four decision factors that matter most: fiber, pile height, fire rating, and end-use environment.

1. Fiber Selection: Nylon vs. Polypropylene

Fiber determines lifespan and appearance retention. The commercial market splits between nylon (Nylon) and polypropylene (PP).

  • Nylon 6 / Nylon 6,6: Outstanding wear, resilience, and anti-static performance — the right choice for high-traffic commercial spaces. Nylon 6,6 has a tighter molecular structure and resists crushing over time, making it the premium commercial standard.
  • Polypropylene (PP): Lower cost, excellent stain resistance, but poor resilience under heavy loads — suitable only for low-traffic or temporary applications.
  • Blends: Nylon and PP blended to balance cost and performance for mid-budget projects.

Procurement tip: lead with Nylon 6,6 for star-rated hotels and Grade-A offices; high-density PP can work for budget retail chains.

2. Pile Height and Face Weight: The Comfort-Durability Trade-off

Pile height and face weight define how thick and dense the carpet is.

Parameter Range Application Notes
Pile height 3–5 mm Offices, meeting rooms Thin profile allows chair castors to roll; easy to clean
Pile height 6–8 mm Hotels, malls Balances foot feel and durability — mainstream spec
Pile height 9 mm+ Premium lounges, ballrooms Luxurious feel; requires more frequent maintenance
Face weight 600–800 g/m² Entry commercial Economic; short- to mid-term use
Face weight 900–1100 g/m² Standard commercial Mainstream; 8–10 year service life
Face weight 1200 g/m²+ Heavy commercial Airports, subway stations, ultra-high traffic

The key insight: face weight matters more than pile height. A low-weight, high-pile carpet lacks density and the fiber crushes quickly; a high-weight, low-pile carpet is dense and wears far better.

3. Fire Rating: A Hard Compliance Gate

Fire-rating requirements differ sharply by destination market. Confirm the mandatory standard before shipment.

  • China GB 8624: Commercial spaces require B1 (difficult to ignite).
  • EU EN 13501-1: Typically Bfl or CFL class.
  • US NFPA 703: Commercial spaces usually require Class A or Class I.
  • IMO (International Maritime): Applies to ships and airports — FTP Code Part 5 test.

Backing also affects fire performance. PVC bitumen is the commercial default — fire-resistant, moisture-tolerant, dimensionally stable. Plain bitumen costs less but is less eco-friendly. Soft PU backing feels great but fire performance must be verified separately.

4. Scenario-based Recommendations

Offices

Open-plan desks and meeting rooms: 50×50 cm tiles, nylon tufted, pile 4–6 mm, face weight 800–1000 g/m², PVC backing, B1 fire-rated. Darker or textured designs hide caster marks.

Star-rated Hotels

Guestrooms and corridors: Nylon 6,6, pile 6–8 mm, face weight 1000 g/m²+. Use patterned prints to elevate the look. Public areas must meet the highest local fire class.

Retail Complexes

High-traffic zones: high-density nylon, low pile (5–6 mm), face weight 1100 g/m²+. Backing must tolerate moisture for frequent cleaning.

5. Procurement Checklist

Before placing the order, confirm each item below:

  • Fiber type and nylon variant (Nylon 6 / 6,6)
  • Pile height, face weight, total thickness
  • Backing type and weight
  • Fire-rating test report (GB 8624 / EN 13501-1 / NFPA 703)
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification
  • Anti-static, anti-slip, and anti-microbial treatment spec
  • Color fastness (≥ grade 4) and color-difference control plan
  • MOQ, lead time, and sample approval workflow
